The Republicannibals pulled it together and stopped devouring each other. They finally elected a speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson of Louisiana. Good for them, but the damage is done. The Party has shown us its true colors. Beelzebub’s silver-tongued, hellspawn Matt Gaetz and his gang of garbage-pale-kids-arsonists, aka the freedom caucus, got their way and threatened the rest of their colleagues into electing a certified nutter.
It took them three weeks and the rejection of three other, more qualified candidates before they crossed the finish line. The last one, Tom Emmer, lost because he accepted the reality of Biden’s win and voted to certify the 2020 results. Congress certifying the already-certified results from the states is what everyone used to do before Trump, the sore loser, came to town. True to form, he was still pissed about that, and as we know, when Trump says jump, cowardly GOP congress members ask, “How high?”.
Most Americans haven’t even heard of this junior congressman. But basically, they just settled on Jim Jordan with a jacket and a smile. His quick resume: He’s as far-right wing as they come, anti-women’s reproductive rights, against same-sex marriage, opposes continued funding to support the war in Ukraine, and is an election-denier. Stellar credentials, undoubtedly. He was one of the principal architects in Congress for the theory to justify rejecting the certified electoral college results from the states. What a peach.
The Republican Party is, without a doubt, more extreme, more backward, more intolerant, more anti-democratic, and more dangerous to the future of America than ever before. Unsurprisingly I suppose, this party – that has so fully rotted and imploded – has elevated an extremist no-name representative to the Speaker’s chair AND at the same time is inexplicably trying to reinstate the thin-skinned sore loser, the Fuhrer of Fraud, and Emperor of Insurrection back into the highest office in the land. WTF? The Party of Lincoln, Reagan, and John McCain is dead and buried, replaced by a toxic, anti-democratic cult. That doesn’t bode well for any of us.
